Web archive and cached page removal

A deleted page does not always stay gone. We work to remove archived snapshots from the Wayback Machine and archive.today, and clear cached copies, so a story cannot simply be pulled back up.

Getting a damaging page taken down is only half the job. Web archives like the Wayback Machine (archive.org) and archive.today keep snapshots of pages long after the originals are deleted, and search engines hold cached copies for a while too. Anyone who knows where to look can pull the content straight back up. Real removal means clearing these copies as well.

Why archives matter

An archived snapshot is a working copy of the page frozen in time. If a journalist, investigator or opponent has the original URL, they can often find it in an archive even after the live page is gone. Leaving snapshots in place undoes much of the value of the original takedown.

How we clear them

We request removal of the relevant snapshots directly from each archive, citing the grounds that apply, such as the removal or correction of the source page, privacy and data-protection concerns, or a successful legal takedown. In parallel, we ask search engines to refresh or drop their cached versions so the old copy stops surfacing.

What is realistic

Archives vary. Some cooperate quickly, others are slower or more reluctant, and a few require a stronger legal basis. We are straight with you about which is which, and we tell you up front what a realistic outcome looks like for your specific pages.

FAQ

Common questions

Can you remove a page from the Wayback Machine or web archives?

Often, yes. Archived snapshots on the Wayback Machine (archive.org) and archive.today can keep a deleted page alive. We request removal of those snapshots and clear cached copies, so the content cannot simply be pulled back up. Some archives cooperate faster than others, and we tell you what is realistic up front.

Why remove the archive if the page is already deleted?

Because the archived snapshot is a working copy. Anyone with the original link can pull the content back up from an archive unless the snapshot is removed too.

How long does archive removal take?

It varies by archive. Some respond within days, others take longer or need a stronger legal basis. We give you a realistic timeframe before you commit.
